Beavers and Cubs celebrated the

Campaign for Drawing’s Big Draw

Day for the second year running.  Last year they took part in The Big Draw at the Tate Modern, but this year they emulated the great artists themselves by taking part in ‘Artrageous!’ a fun afternoon recreating great works of art by renowned artists such as Jackson Pollock, Piet Mondrian and Pablo Picasso, and also learning some more modern skills such as computer art.

The Handicraft challenge this year was to produce a ‘Colony Treasure’ in keeping with the Egyptian Theme for Beaver Fun Day.  Beavers enjoyed several very messy evenings creating a papier mache pyramid and making scrolls with hieroglyphics and decorating stones and other treasures.  The contest was judged by Sharon Andrews ACC Beaver Scouts and Knaphill were awarded first prize!   Well Done to everyone and in particular Young Leaders, Sam and Laura, for their efforts in keeping the papier mache under control!

Artrageous was organised by Young Leader, Ben, as part of his leadership element of his Arts Award:  ‘It was really rewarding to see the enjoyment the Beavers and Cubs had during Artrageous, they seemed to enjoy all the activities and went home laden with all their new creations.  It was a good follow up to the trip to the Tate Modern last year, as many of them remembered seeing the original works of art and were keen to have a go themselves.  They were also very keen to try the computer art.  I learnt some new skills editing photos during a summer school at WYAC (Woking Youth Arts Centre) and taught Beavers and Cubs how to ‘liquify’ photos during Artrageous, they loved the grotesque results!’

Text Box: Knaphill Eyespy Quiz—September 2008

Many thanks to Eileen and Steve from KRA for coming along to make the presentation—We look forward to next years quiz!

November 2008 — Willow Colony Beavers Climb Up High!

Eight of our oldest Beavers enjoyed a taster climbing session at the Vertex Climbing Wall, University of Surrey, completing their Chief Scout’s Bronze Awards in style!  JJ, Christian, Shaun, Joseph, Daniel, Clayton, Arun and Thomas all completed a variety of climbs on the indoor walls and some tried bouldering.  For most this was their first time climbing and they were fearless, soon overcoming any apprehensions.   Many thanks to instructors: Paul, James and Ross for giving up their Friday evening to give Beavers this opportunity.

Sept 2009  1st Knaphill Beaver Scouts visit Buddhist Temple …

Beaver Scouts from Knaphill recently enjoyed a  visit to the Dhammakaya Temple in Knaphill to learn more about Buddhism towards their Faith Badge.  Brother Nicholas explained about life as a Buddhist monk and answered extensive questions from the youngsters.  They learnt about ceremonies and festivals and the five precepts which all Buddhists follow.  They all tried meditation which was a new experience for many and Beavers enjoyed discussing similarities and differences between the temple and other churches they have visited.  Both Beaver Scouts and Leaders found the visit really interesting and all came away enlightened about the Buddhist faith.
