CUBS BACK TO BASICS CAMP

Date: 15th May 2023 Author: Tracey Daniell

Cubs had a fantastic weekend on the annual Woking District Back to Basics Camp for approximately 100 Sixers & Seconders.

The Saturday was filled with 6 bases: bivouacs, backwoods cooking, branding and firelighting, climbing, first aid, and pioneering.. The Knaphill leaders were supporting the instructors on the climbing wall and Bagheera (Charlie) joined in with the belaying and climbing instruction for all the cubs.

Tent inspection and a campfire skit are important fixtures of this camp and our cubs went all out to have their 2 tents spotless and neatly aligned. They got a builders line with some long cord and made sure all the guy ropes and pegs, plus the tents, were all in perfect alignment.

They worked hard rehearsing the campfire skit for their performance of “Gotta go Wee” which raised a lot of laughs that evening.

On Sunday we all checked the tents for neatness and cleanliness to be ready for the district team’s inspection. Sadly they missed out on the prize for the best skit but they completely blew out the competition for the best tent!! The District team could not tell any difference between the girl’s tent and the boy’s tent, and they are very fussy, so Knaphill won the prize as a pack instead! The tents were excellent. This standard will be expected on every camp!

Overall the cubs had a great weekend of activities and mixing with other cubs from packs all round Woking; they worked as a team really well and had lots of fun.
