CUBS SKILLS CAMP…….
I really enjoyed the recent Cubs skills camp that I went on. We did lots of things, but my favourite was cooking our own food on trangias. I found the 6k hike enjoyable especially since we had to take bearings. When we got to the campsite, we put up our tents, which I found quite easy as I had done it a lot of times. After this, we had an hour or more of free time where we got to play around and relax. After some time, we were called in for dinner -rice and chilli- which we had to make on the trangias. We boiled the rice for 7 mins then boiled the chilli for the remaining 5 mins, then dished it out between our tent groups. Then, we made a fire from some twigs and logs that we collected from the wood by the campsite, and roasted horse-chestnuts on the fire while singing songs like ‘Bungalow’ ‘There was a bird’ and ‘Campfire’s burning’. The next day we changed into wetsuits for rafting. We built the rafts by lifting the provided wooden base on 6 plastic barrels to make it float. To secure it, we tied a series of knots around the base then lifted it on the water. We paddled, swapped sides on the raft and swam in some shallow water before investing the young Cubs. Then we changed out of our wetsuits, packed up our rucksacks and the tents and headed home. We explained what we did to our parents when we got to our destination, then went home. The 2 things I found really challenging were finding dry wood for our fire after a long rain, but after some thorough searching we managed to find enough for a small fire and changing out of our wetsuits. We managed by helping one another pull it off. Overall it was a great experience and I’d love to do it again.

On Saturday 14th OctoberI went on a lightweight camp at Explore in Mytchett. We hiked to the camp carrying all our stuff: clothes, crockery, cutlery and a lot of other things. I personally found it not too hard but my bag was a bit heavy. The hike for my group took 3 hours. The thing I found hard was the rafting in the morning because it was so cold. I enjoyed the food the most because we cooked on trangias. We only stayed for one night in our tents that we put up ourselves. The next day we headed out of explore and hiked to the canal centre where our parents met us and then took us home for a nice warm shower. This was my last camp as a cub so I felt sad it was over.
