HIGHLIGHTS OF SUMMER CAMP 2024

by Bibi, Scout

On Summer Camp, we went to the New Forest with the Cubs and Explorers.

We did our own cooking, which was fun because we could tailor the recipe to our own tastes. The Hungry Games were fun because we got to make our own recipe and had a budget. We made a 3 course meal and the leaders and a scout judged it. Also a wonderful team won because they’re so brilliant at cooking.

You had a choice of where you slept and making hammock towns/cities with friends was fun. Also, if you did so, you could chat and that was fun. (✯ᴗ✯)

Beach day was FUN because you could go into waves or lie down or go to town literally or build sandcastles.

We hiked to the river and it took hours but it was worth it when we made a dam (like, a PROPER dam) and went swimming. The horses came and tried to eat our

lunch but we stopped them.

We got to make the fire ourselves (this one is of us building the leader campfire.) (The legs are Tom.)

Overall, it’s more fun than Xbox.

Summer camp report

by Tom, Scout

Day 1

On day 1, we got the train to Beaulieu and then hiked to Ferny Crofts. Once we were in, not much happened other than usual setting up with the mess tent and all of the normal tents and I got to help plan where things could go in the campsite as we had 2 pitches. Unfortunately, the leaders were very busy and got quite annoyed because we kept asking about hammocks but there wasn’t enough time.

Day 2

On day 2, everything was much more relaxed and lots of the scouts got to set up hammocks and make small hammock cities with friends. I was in a U-shaped city with Edison and James Langlois. We took a long time as it was very fiddly to set up the tarps. Once we had it all set up, we went around looking at other people’s hammock cities then played a lot of frisbee.

Day 3

On day 3, it was beach day! We got the train to near the beach and then hiked for 30 mins. Unfortunately, it was really hot and we couldn’t stay the whole day but it was very refreshing going in the water and lots of scouts were very excited. A few of us also tried to build a sand castle/ fort with loads of walls to try and protect it from the tide. We then got the train home and cooked dinner.

Day 4

On day 4, we went to the New Forest county fair. It was another hot day but thankfully there was a lot of ice cream stalls. In one of the main arenas, we watched dirt bikes doing stunts in the air and in another arena, there was horses and near them were dogs. We also got to see a lot of old tractors and 1 traction engine. Because of the extreme temperature and lack of shade, we headed home early again.

Day 5

On day 5, we had to plan a 3-course meal for a cooking competition later. Once we had a recipe and the list of ingredients, our patrol leaders went to the shops to get the food. After they had returned, we needed to start our food. My job was to make the starter of halloumi fries which turned out quite well.

Day 6

On day 6, we went on a hike along some of the fire trails near the trainline. Our spot that we got to was part of a river that was very shallow and quite murky. Lots of us found a very good spot and started building a dam which proved to be quite effective against the river. After that we got a lift home in the minibuses and when we got back, we went up to the pizza oven to play volleyball and make pizza.

Day 7

On day 7, we went to a wildlife centre and saw some rare and very cool animals such as a lynx, wolves, deer, wildcats and lots of otters which were very cute. We also got to look at feathers and the difference between horns and antlers.

Day 8

On day 8, it was just packing up camp as usual then doing a litter pick. Once everything was cleared up, we went home.
