SCOUTING NATIONAL RIFLE CHAMPIONSHIPS SUCCESS….
Report by James W, Scout
Last weekend I went to my first ever Scouting National Rifle Championships at Bisley. I was nervous, but excited at the same time as we all met up first thing Saturday. I was amazed by the number of people who were there, and the distance that some of them had come. Many were camping there over the weekend, so it was good that the weather was fine for them.
I took part in 4 events – the 6yd Rifle, the 6yd Pistol, Field Target and a knock-out contest which involved shooting down as many targets in 2 minutes as we could. My favourite event was the rifle, and it seemed to go very well on the day. The hardest event was the Field Target because it involved lying down to shoot and I had never really done this before other than once at Family Camp. I came 7th in air rifle and 8th in the under 12 age group for the overall combined score.
Overall I really enjoyed the experience, I think I learned a lot about competition shooting, and look forward to next year (and hopefully some other competitions in between). I have discovered I really love shooting and am really grateful to all the Scout leaders for giving me the opportunity to have a go.
