SCOUTS: MAY EXPO ON DARTMOOR….
Event report by Cameron, Scout
I had never been to Dartmoor before, but having heard about it, decided it was something that I wanted to do.
The journey down was long and slow with a much needed break at a motorway service station. A frappe and mozarella sticks helped me through the drive.
On arrival at the activity centre our sleeping accommodation looked like a POW camp from World War 2. However, it was pleasant enough to sleep in and the kitchen & hall provided good food and shelter.
During our time away we loved playing in the forest, building dams and shelters, spotting animals and long walks.
The hikes at the start of the week were nice and dry which, when climbing the ten Tors was very helpful as the fifteen kilometre walk had plenty of rocks. The views were amazing!
Next day hike was 12 km where after only 10 mins I managed to fall in the water and spent the rest of it trying to dry off during the walk. We did however enjoy a swim in the river at the end of the hike. We were told it was a salmon river and we were happy to find a baby one!
On Tuesday our hike in the pouring rain finished with a rock climb. We all sheltered under a portable shelter whilst we waited to climb, and guess what,……12 of us managed to fit under it!
On the last morning we packed our bags, did the litter pick and set off for home.
The stop at Burger King made the long jouney more bearable.
I would like to thank all leaders for making this trip a memorable experience.
