SCOUT’S RADIO CAMP…

Date: 31st Jan 2024 Author: Tracey Daniell

Radio camp was a fun learning experience. The camp was about learning the ways radios are made, and how they transmit and receive signals, and it taught me about the electromagnetic spectrum. All the learning was split up into different modules which we learned with breaks in between. It was not like a traditional class environment; it was more laid back, and we could take our notes and study at our own pace as we were given binders with all the 400 slides we had to learn. The leaders prepared yummy chicken paella for dinner, and I got to camp indoors with my friends and study for an exam together.

The exam in the morning was much like exams at schools, with desks set up far apart, in silence and an hour long. The exam required 19/26 questions correct to obtain an amateur radio license which meant we were legally allowed to use radios within the amateur radio bandwidths. The exam was hard, and I was worried I might not score enough to get my license. Luckily, I just passed and got my radio license. All in all, it was a fun camp, and I would recommend it to other Scouts who were not able to go this year.
