WOKING DISTRICT LIGHTWEIGHT EXPEDITION CHALLENGE …
District Light Weight Challenge (DLC for short) is a tricky challenge across two days where you have to travel a total of about 21km (this year it was in Reigate and around Box Hill). You have to plan your route for the first day prior to the event making sure you also go past all the checkpoints on the way, but on the night of the first day you need to plan your route for the second day still making sure you go past every checkpoint.
If you are in the training team you will have a leader(s) helping you with some of the aspects such as taking bearings, cooking and telling you if you went wrong. If you are in the competition team you have to do all the aspects that you do in the training team but you won’t have any leaders to help you (unless it’s an emergency), and in the competition team you also need to carry your sleeping equipment with you so it makes your bag heavier.
From my experience in the training team this year I had an amazing time and my team all really enjoyed it, and now I am really excited for next year where I will definitely do it again and hopefully I will be in the competition team. I would definitely recommend it to others but it is quite the challenge to complete. It also ticks off several things for the Chief Scouts Gold Award (CSG).
